We Gather at the Edge: Contemporary Quilts by Black Women Artists

  • Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum 1661 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest Washington, DC, 20006 United States (map)

In 2023, the Smithsonian American Art Museum acquired thirty-five quilts from Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi’s collection. An aerospace engineer, artist, and curator, Mazloomi founded the Women of Color Quilters Network in 1985 to connect Black textile artists. This exhibition showcases quilts that tell powerful stories of Black history and culture through intricate craft. Honoring Mazloomi’s legacy, it celebrates the artistry and storytelling traditions of the Women of Color Quilters Network.
